In 2020, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) announced the theme for International Museum Day: “Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion.” It was stated that the core of the museum’s social value should be to create meaningful experiences for groups of different origins and backgrounds. This confers greater social responsibility on the museum.
The National Taiwan Museum (NTM) is committed to removing barriers that prevent different visitor groups from visiting. Faced with an aging society and a rapidly growing population with dementia in Taiwan, the NTM is constantly considering “how museums should serve this land and its people, and whether museums can do anything for such a group?” We believe that it is not just the NTM, but museums all over Taiwan and around the world that are studying and trying to put this aim into practice.
The NTM cooperates with medical institutions to jointly promote the "Museum on Prescription" service, so that patients not only receive medical help, but also actively participate in social activities, delaying the negative impact of symptoms and easing the relationship between patients and caregivers. We hope to reduce the pressure on caregivers and medical costs, and move towards a friendlier social environment.
