Lumi - Digestive AI Health Companion

Reimagining Digestive Health

Lumi is an AI-powered gut–brain companion designed to support people living with chronic digestive discomfort and IBS (Imposter Bowel Syndrome) through emotionally intelligent, personalized healthcare experiences. Inspired by my own experience living with IBS, the project explores how digestive symptoms are often influenced not by a single trigger, but by the interaction between stress, sleep, food, emotions, and behavioral patterns over time. Grounded in emerging research around the gut–brain axis, Lumi helps users better understand how their body reacts in everyday life while reducing the emotional burden often associated with chronic condition management.


Conversational Pattern Recognition & Emotional Healthcare Support

Traditional symptom-tracking apps often feel clinical and burdensome, turning health management into another task users feel obligated to complete. Lumi reimagines this experience through supportive daily conversations that feel more like speaking with a companion than using a medical tool. Through lightweight check-ins, contextual follow-up questions, and AI-powered pattern recognition, Lumi gradually learns each user’s digestive health patterns over time.


Personalized Digestive Health Intelligence

Users can log meals, mood, stress, sleep, and symptoms through photos, voice, or text input. Lumi analyzes ingredients, identifies potential high- or low-FODMAP sensitivities, and connects them with previously observed reactions. By combining food intake, emotional wellbeing, behavioral patterns, and wearable signals, Lumi surfaces personalized insights that help users understand how multiple factors may collectively contribute to digestive discomfort.


Preventative Care Through Human-Centered Design

Rather than focusing solely on symptom tracking, Lumi emphasizes reflection, pattern recognition, and preventative care. The system provides contextual guidance such as calming exercises, gentler meal suggestions, and emotionally aware support tailored to the user’s condition throughout the day.

The Lumi character and visual language were intentionally designed to create a calmer, more approachable healthcare experience that fosters emotional connection and reduces anxiety around chronic health management. By transforming complex health data into supportive conversations and actionable insights, Lumi reimagines how AI can support long-term digestive wellbeing through empathy and human-centered healthcare design.
