Helix set out to create a film that gives form to something few ever see: the silent struggle of a ventilated patient battling hypercapnia and acidosis - and the quiet precision of a therapy designed to help. At its heart, this is a story about balance, both biological and visual: the shifting of CO₂, the return of rhythm, the interplay between internal physiology and external intervention.
We begin in the ICU, where stillness and urgency coexist, before descending into the patient’s lungs - a delicate world of collapsed alveoli, dead space, and halted exchange.
From here, we introduce the solution: Vantive’s ECCO2R therapy, rendered not only through its physical components but through its impact at the molecular level. A pivotal membrane sequence marks the turning point - both scientifically and emotionally, where disorder gives way to flow, and intervention restores possibility. In parallel, the patient begins to breathe more freely, clinical monitors stabilize, and the ICU shifts subtly toward resolution.
Helix’s team built every moment from the ground up: consulting with experts, crafting accurate simulations, designing layered transitions between body and machine, cell and screen. The result is a film that respects its audience’s knowledge while offering something more - a visual and conceptual clarity that’s both informative and immersive. It is science rendered with care, storytelling shaped by structure, and animation in service of understanding. A piece designed not only to explain, but to resonate.
