Smith+Nephew Academy

Unispace partnered with Smith+Nephew to deliver a cutting-edge Surgical Innovation and Training Academy in Munich, a flagship facility designed to support advanced medical training and research. The academy serves as a hub for healthcare professionals from around the globe, with the capacity to accommodate up to 5,000 doctors and specialists annually. By integrating training, research, and development under one roof, the facility fosters collaboration and innovation in orthopaedics, wound management, and sports medicine.



The 3,500 sqm academy was constructed within a remodelled 1970s building in Kustermann Park, a vibrant and central Munich location. Despite the structural limitations of a former casino, our design team overcame challenges to create a seamless and modern training space. The academy includes a range of high-tech environments: wet and dry labs, an auditorium, a virtual reality training centre, video recording studios, and an exhibition space. Advanced medical technology, such as X-rays, radiation lasers, and C-arms, are integrated throughout the facility to support surgical training. New air-handling systems and dedicated server rooms ensure optimal environmental conditions and data management.



One of the design's key achievements was reflecting Smith+Nephew’s brand identity while creating a welcoming and innovative atmosphere. We utilised their signature bright and fresh colour palette, softened with neutral tones, to create a clean, yet inviting environment. An interactive history wall celebrates the company’s journey and juxtaposes its heritage with modern digital installations. Additionally, the academy’s entrance tunnel features blue lighting inspired by Munich’s Allianz Arena, grounding the design in the local culture.



Close collaboration with stakeholders, including engineers, lab technicians, and the building’s landlord, was essential to navigate logistical challenges, such as working around existing tenants and refurbishments. The result is a world-class facility where healthcare providers can engage in immersive, hands-on learning, driving the future of medical innovation.
