The innovation of the Silent Mentor Program extends beyond anatomical donation and simulated surgical training, establishing an integrated model that connects advocacy, social trust, life donation, and medical education, while redefining relationships among donors, families, volunteers, and medical professionals.
In mainstream anatomical education, anonymity is generally the norm, with donors’ identities and life stories separated from medical training. In contrast, before surgical training, students first learn their mentor’s life story, visit the family, and participate in humanistic rituals such as encoffining and farewell ceremonies. Surgical training thus becomes an immersive classroom for bioethics, gratitude, and empathy.
This model is built on long-term social trust. Master Cheng Yen, founder of the Tzu Chi Foundation and Tzu Chi University, advocated the principle that “we only have the right to use our body, not ownership of it,” encouraging people to dedicate their bodies to medical education after death. Through its community-based volunteer network, Tzu Chi accompanies donors and families from understanding and decision-making through donation and final farewell. In Chinese culture, where people traditionally value the belief that the body is received from one’s parents and should remain intact after death, this sustained dialogue has gradually strengthened public understanding and trust in body donation.
Tzu Chi University further integrates this foundation into medical education. Planning began in 2000, and flash-freezing preservation was formally developed in 2002 using rapid freezing at -30°C, reducing tissue damage and preserving tissue elasticity and feel close to living tissue after thawing. This enables realistic surgical practice.
Ultimately, the Silent Mentor Program is not merely a medical technique, but a complete model: Charitable organizations build social trust → the public voluntarily participates in life donation → medical education institutions transform donations into professional training → humanistic education feeds back into healthcare. Its distinctive value lies in the integration of social mobilization, medical expertise, and the dedication of donors and families.
