The RISER

Invented by a Firefighter, The RISER is the first portable patient lifting device that reduces the physical strain of lifting a fall patient from the floor. It utilizes a smooth pivoting transition to change the geometry of the lift itself - allowing responders to guide fall patients upward in a controlled, ergonomic motion that protects both patient dignity & provider safety by providing a 3:1 mechanical advantage per user. Thus reducing strain on caregivers while improving control, safety, and dignity during patient lifts.

What makes The RISER novel is its combination of portability, simplicity, and real-world functionality. Traditional lifting solutions are often bulky, expensive, powered, or impractical in confined environments such as bathrooms, bedrooms, hallways, and private homes—precisely where many falls occur. The RISER was designed specifically for those settings, delivering controlled lifting assistance in a compact, durable, and rapidly deployable format. In the flat position, it has the same dimensions as a backboard & can be conveniently stored in the standard backboard compartment of every ambulance & fire engine in the country. The RISER rolls like airline luggage in its flat position, making for easy conveyance from the emergency apparatus to wherever the fall patient is located.

Its originality also lies in replacing strength-dependent manual lifting with a mechanical advantage system that reduces physical strain while improving stability and safety. The low profile design makes it easy to load the patient on, and then they can be lifted from the front, rear or either side of the patient by using pull straps or designated areas on the frame. Using the pull straps eliminates bending over entirely while performing the patient lift. The engineering provides a 6:1 mechanical advantage for two operators, greatly reducing the physical strain of lifting. Once upright, the wheeled frame allows the patient to be rolled to the gurney, back to bed, etc. The stainless steel frame & HDPE seat are nonporous & easily sanitized.
