While individually rare, rare diseases collectively affect 5%-6% of the population, or 350 to 400 million people worldwide. Yet, people living with a rare disease often experience long delays before a correct diagnosis, poor support from healthcare systems, and steep financial losses. The global cost of the long diagnostic odyssey–including unnecessary healthcare use and lost productivity–is staggering. Rare disease awareness amongst clinicians is crucial in reducing the diagnostic delay and enabling earlier access to management.
Recognizing this urgent gap, Medscape Education launched the Pathways in Rare Disease Learning Center, an innovative initiative designed to empower healthcare professionals with the knowledge and competence needed to increase recognition of rare diseases and improve patient outcomes.
Independent and continuing medical education like Pathways in Rare Disease is fueling the next generation of clinical innovation, giving physicians the confidence, insight, and expertise to push the boundaries of modern medicine. In a recent (Nov 2025) Medscape survey of 1152 physicians worldwide, an extraordinary 95% affirmed that this type of education is essential in preparing them for tomorrow’s breakthroughs.
For over 13 million clinicians around the world, Medscape isn’t just a resource — it’s a trusted ally. In the same survey, 83% of physicians recognised it as indispensable; a reflection of its unmatched ability to inform, inspire, and empower medical professionals every day. Even more telling? 85% said they would recommend Medscape to their peers, fueling a community with enhanced knowledge to transform patient care.
February is the awareness month for rare disease, culminating in Rare Disease Day on February 28 2025, providing an opportunity to engage with clinicians and direct them to the resource center.
