Health Equity

With healthy equity being one of the core values of the organization, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee recognized the best way to address health disparities among minority populations is to first understand the scope of the challenge. Their first-ever Health Equity Report was published in January 2023 to identify and track 20 of the top health metrics for more than two million members. This report, published online at bcbst.com/healthequity, examines what we know about health inequities among Tennesseans, discusses what the organization is doing to eliminate health disparities, and provides an invaluable resource for medical professionals and organizations who also believe in equitable healthcare for all. It is arguably the first of its kind.



This report is unique and best-in-class for numerous reasons:

• It was not required by any governing entity but was produced because the organization truly cares about the impact health inequities have within the communities it serves.

• The report introduces their proprietary Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) tool, which compiles decades of data to identify social risks members face – providing a window into their ability to improve their health.

• There are few other organizations publishing this much relevant data in an accessible, digestible, and prominent manner.

• The site design is unique and a departure from the traditional “blue brand”, implementing bright colors that visually call attention to the inequities of Tennesseans. The use of multiple data charts is also a new addition to the company’s traditional web template.
