If you’ve ever entered an ICU, you’ve experienced the cacophony of alarm noise coming from the bedside monitors. The vast majority, 80-99%, of those alarms require no clinical intervention, making for a horrendous status quo. With long work shifts, short staffing, and post-COVID-19 pressure on an already-stressed healthcare system, nurses are experiencing alarm fatigue, burnout, and overall workplace exhaustion. Excessive noise in ICUs also contributes to lack of sleep, hindering patient recovery and increasing risks such as ICU delirium. Add to that the phenomena of phantom alarms that plague nurses at home and you can understand why nursing as a profession is in dire straits.

CalmWave’s Operations Health Platform™ improves both nurse retention and patient outcomes by objectively reducing alarm fatigue in intensive care units through the use of Transparent AI. CalmWave ingests the hospital’s high-frequency data from diverse sources, including electronic medical record systems, on-network medical devices, and patient vital signs, and distills that data into actionable information. CalmWave empowers clinicians with the information they need whenever they need it, supporting mission-critical decision-making in the ICU and improving patient outcomes.

CalmWave reduces non-actionable alarms by as much as 83 percent when compared to the same number of manual alarm limit adjustments. Our mission is to improve the lives of patients and providers, starting with eliminating non-actionable alarms.

Rooted in decades of Enterprise IT expertise, CalmWave is the world’s first Transparent AI-powered platform for healthcare. The use of Transparent AI, rather than generative AI, helps build trust, avoid feature drift and biases, and ensure compliance with regulations and auditing of results. It provides explainability that empowers clinicians with the option to examine each recommendation prior to implementation (Human in the Loop). Observing the rationale behind each AI-generated step enhances the healthcare system's safety, accuracy, and accountability.

CalmWave is the fastest company to go from inception to funding at AI2, a startup incubator at the Allen Institute for AI. Headquartered in Seattle, CalmWave is supported by Bonfire Ventures with participation from Tau Ventures, AI2 Incubator, Seachange Ventures, Hike Ventures, and all three co-founders of PagerDuty.
