CAIRS: A Novel Approach to Keratoconus Management — Surgical Animation
This medical animation provides a detailed, scientifically accurate visualization of the CAIRS procedure (Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segments) — an innovative technique for the treatment of keratoconus. The film guides the viewer through the entire surgical workflow: the preparation of the corneal allograft, the preparation of the patient's eye, and the femtosecond laser–assisted implantation of the CAIRS graft into the corneal stroma, ultimately achieving flattening of the corneal topology and improvement of visual acuity.
Keratoconus is a progressive, degenerative corneal disorder characterized by the gradual thinning and conical protrusion of the cornea. This deformation leads to irregular astigmatism, progressive myopia, corneal scarring, and significant deterioration of vision, often affecting patients in their most productive years — adolescence and early adulthood. Left untreated, it may progress to severe visual impairment or the need for corneal transplantation.
The condition presents a major clinical challenge. Conventional solutions such as rigid contact lenses address symptoms but do not halt progression or restore normal corneal architecture. Traditional synthetic intrastromal ring segments (ICRS) carry risks of extrusion, corneal melting, infection, and biocompatibility complications, since they introduce a foreign, non-biological material into the cornea.
This is precisely where the significance of CAIRS emerges. By using allogenic (donor) corneal tissue instead of synthetic polymers, the procedure offers superior biocompatibility — eliminating the risks of extrusion and melting — alongside natural tissue integration, effective corneal flattening, and a minimally invasive, tissue-preserving alternative that may delay or prevent full corneal transplantation. The integration of the femtosecond laser further enhances precision, enabling intrastromal channels with micron-level accuracy and maximizing safety and reproducibility.
By combining scientific precision, surgical accuracy, and clear visual storytelling, this animation demonstrates how CAIRS addresses the long-standing challenges of keratoconus — offering patients a safer, vision-restoring solution and the medical community a powerful tool for education and clinical communication.
